råvi organics x Blueme Lokal — Slow Flowers for Mother’s Day.
Interview: Catherine (råvi organics) and Carmen (Blueme Lokal)
For a Mother’s Day event, we wanted to highlight the versatility of our mouth-blown diffuser vases by showcasing them as elegant flower vases. To bring this idea to life, I searched for a florist who truly embodies the values of slow, mindful floristry. When I set out to find a Slow Flower florist, Carmen’s profile immediately caught my eye. Her deep passion for the flowers she grows herself shines through in every arrangement. What truly inspires me about Carmen is her remarkable attention to detail and profound plant knowledge. For us, a flower isn’t just beautiful — it carries a story, a scent, even healing properties. Flowers and plants are full of mysteries waiting to be discovered, and Carmen’s journey into the Slow Flower movement is a beautiful testament to that.
Catherine: How did you get into floristry – and when did you realize that Slow Flowers were the right path for you?
Carmen: I started gardening about five years ago. Around the same time, my sister and I wanted to start a project together. We explored a few different ideas, but ended up going with the concept of using flowers from the garden. It wasn’t until later that I learned there was actually a term for it: Slow Flowers.
Catherine: What does “Slow Flowers” mean to you personally?
Carmen: Less is more – in favor of quality and mindfulness. To me, Slow Flowers are about blooms that are grown naturally and by hand, leaving space for insects and wildlife. Flowers that grow locally, allowing for short transport routes by bike or train. Flowers that follow the seasons and surprise us – nurtured solely by rainwater and sunlight. It’s about using resources wisely and sustainably. These values shape everything we do at Blueme Lokal.
Catherine: Where do you source your flowers — do you grow them yourself or work with local growers?
Carmen: All the flowers come from my own production.
Catherine: What do you pay special attention to when selecting your flowers?
Carmen: I focus on native varieties and love discovering rare or unusual ones.
Catherine: Is there a flower that never fails to fascinate you?
Carmen: Every flower is unique. What fascinates me most is seeing each one through its full life cycle — fresh, wilted, dried, in seed form, and finally as seed. Looking closer, it’s often the little details that captivate me — like the pattern of a leaf or the shape of a petal. The catchfly, for example, has tiny heart shapes hidden in its bouquet.
Catherine: What are your favorite alternatives to roses for Valentine’s Day?
Carmen: Hellebores — snow roses. One of the first flowers of the year to bloom outdoors in nature.
Catherine: What inspires your floral arrangements — nature, seasons, color?
Carmen: Form and color, mostly. There needs to be balance, but also something playful. I’m also guided by the occasion and by the person receiving the bouquet.
Catherine: What challenges come with working seasonally — and how do you handle them
Carmen: Working with limited resources pushes you to be creative. The real challenge is encouraging people to shift their perspective.
Catherine: What do you hope to see in the future of the Slow Flower movement?
Carmen: I hope for continued mindful consumption, and a deeper appreciation for craftsmanship — and fair pricing.
Catherine: How do the shape or color of a vase influence your choice of flowers?
Carmen: I like the colors to complement and play off each other. For smaller vases, I tend to choose flowers with shorter stems — to me, that feels more natural and intentional than trimming longer stems. The longer ones I save for larger vases.
Catherine: What story did you want to tell with the mini bouquet?
Carmen: Delicate flowers work beautifully in this vase. A few stems are enough, and there's room to showcase different varieties - like lady's mantle, which felt suitable to mothers and Mother's Day.
Catherine: It was a pleasure working with you and learning more about your lovely garden and the Slow Flower movement. Thank you for adding a touch of floral richness to our Mother's Day event!
Carmen: Thank you for your calm, professional manner - for the appreciation, the creative freedom, and the openness. It was a real joy. And thank you for such an inspiring product.
